The prestigious Georgia Water and Pollution Control Association Award for 2003 was presented to the Big Flat Creek Water Reclamation Facility in Loganville, Georgia. The Big Flat Creek facility competed with nine other Georgia operations in the 1.1 to 10 mgd category. Six inspection teams judged the facilities on many aspects of operation, including safety, maintenance, effluent quality, record keeping and general housekeeping.
The Big Flat Creek facility, designed by Pendergrass & Associates in Conyers, Georgia, uses the U. S. Filter Jet-Tech SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) process which combines biological treatment with nutrient removal in one basin. Aeration is provided by three HOFFMAN & LAMSON 857 Series Multistage Centrifugal Blowers that were installed in July, 2001. Each high efficiency blower is driven by a 100 hp motor and produces a maximum airflow of 2,750 cfm and 8.75 psig. The blowers operate 2 hours per cycle, approximately 20 hours per day. The DO (dissolved oxygen) process uses DSC controlled motorized inlet butterfly valves to optimize the aerobic digestion process.
The HOFFMAN & LAMSON SmartMeter ® microprocessor-based digital controls monitor blower performance, surge, high overload and vibration. Chris Yancey, Plant Superintendent, is pleased with the blower's performance, stating, "The blowers have had no operational issues and are economical to maintain." This exceptional facility experienced twice the anticipated BOD loading, yet has man-aged to provide continuous service to the community despite unprecedented local commercial growth.
The HOFFMAN & LAMSON multistage centrifugal blowers were chosen over positive displacement type blowers to reduce noise levels, since there was a residential area 200 feet away. Blower noise levels were low enough that a blower building was constructed with an open wall.
Our representative, Kittner Associates, Inc., worked closely with the engineering consultants during the design and installation of the blower system.
